Teacher Notes for Authority Lessons

Bill Gothard's, Basic Institute of Life Principles. For use with the red text. Teacher Notes: Please do not treat their answers as having a right or wrong answer as much as discerning a powerful insight into problem areas that need prayer, more communication, and more study.

Lesson 1 - pages 24-26
Discuss each branch of authority.

Lesson 2 - pages 27-29
(Review this lesson before giving the assignment. Decide if you would like to divide it into two lessons.) Discuss the meaning of Proverbs 21:1 & Jeremiah 17: 9-10. Discuss the examples at the bottom of page 27.

Answer to questions: 1) God will raise up new "tools" to chip away at the rough edges of our character. He will allow irritations and circumstances to reveal areas that need improvement. 2) If we continue to reject correction (reproofs) God warns us that there could be serious damage to the potential of our lives and will hinder our blessings. Discuss the scriptural examples given from the book in 1 Samuel, Proverbs & I Corin.

Discuss with your teen their answers from page 29. Your teen is answering from a position if they were the parent. Their answers will not only be based on the information for each illustration they have been given from the book thus far, but also their knowledge and maturity level at this time. It is Very important to hear them out. Wait until they are finished with their answers without correcting them. Teens must be allowed to have their own opinions and the freedom to express them. Save the bulk of your comments until after they have completed Lesson 3. In Lesson 3 they will have to explain why they think each illustration should submit to their parents.

Lesson 3 - pages 29-32
Discuss the proper attitudes, intentions and alternatives for each illustration.

Lesson 4 - pages 33-35
(Review Step #7 before assigning this lesson.) Discuss with your teen what areas in the 7 steps of action on page 34 & 35 need improvement and what methods or circumstances the Lord has used or may use to develop their character.
  1. Check our attitudes.
  2. Clear our conscience.
  3. Discern basic intentions.
  4. Creative Alternatives.
  5. Proper appeal to authority.
  6. Allow time for prayer to work.
  7. Suffer for not doing wrong. (The three scriptures cited for #7 have No purpose and are not relevant in my opinion. My child agreed. Use them if you like) Instead we discussed and applied the following scriptures for step 7:
1 Peter 3:17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. 1 Peter 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

Many times we choose to suffer consequences because it is something we want to do, how much more so should we choose to suffer when we do something that we know is right for righteousness sake.

Lesson 5 - pages 36-38.
Review & discuss your teen's answers for each of the nine questions from page 37 & 38

Lesson 6 - pages 39 & 40
Examples you may want to discuss or just have your teen read over. Your teen's lesson as is says read over and be prepared to answer verbal questions from these two pages. We purposely skipped pages 41-45. We do feel page 45 is especially important, we just didn't agree to approach that subject in the manner within the book. We'd love for you to email us if you have a better approach.

Lesson 7 - page 46
Six questions that your teen will list their personal offenses and the improvements he thinks should be made. Encourage and praise them for their answers and honesty.

We skipped a large section here. Use your own judgement.

Lesson 8 - pages 87-89.
From p. 87 Have your student explain in his own words how we become like those we resent. Check their written notes. Lesson included to copy Matthew 7:1-2 and Luke 6:37. If you have not already covered "generational curses, reaping what you sow, unconfessed sins of the Father, etc.", It would be a good time to discuss those issues and provide those scriptures as well. Page 88: Basic Steps to gain a forgiving spirit - discuss a recent example from your student's life and discuss how they reacted. Explain that offenses will come and are like tests that God allows to develop our character. The next test of offense could be bigger but that we will continue to take the test until we pass.

Page 89: Our responsibility to "heal" offenses - the teaching on this page should be discerned according to your family's convictions and how you may choose to handle the situation in the example given as "abuse" or "removing unbelief"? I believe each situation is different and we skipped discussing this page, other than agreeing that enough facts were not given.

Lesson 9 - pages 90-92
Instructions are to take at least 1/2 page of notes. Topics touched on are How we benefit by being offended, how we lose by a wrong response, and transforming irritations into spiritual motivation.

Lesson 10 - pages 93-95
Review and/or discuss their sources of irritations from their written work. Discuss the last time your teen was offended or irritated. Make sure they know the difference between those irritations that are beyond our control and those we do have the power to change. This lesson is about situational irritations. Gives examples of "the blame game" "defending self" and "holding in anger". Discuss when it is appropriate to defend someone. Discuss when it's a situation with an " I " problem. Those with an eye problem are always using the word "I" which is a discernable problem with self. Identifying and knowing these sources will help your teen discern root problems and better help them deal with them scripturally as they arise now and later in their life. Discuss a situation where you experienced an irritation or offense and how you handled it. (an example where you were either wrong or where you could have handled it better would help motivate openness with your teen)

We hope you find the above helpful.

We will not reply to emails that criticize or condemn Bill Gothard or IBLP. We do not agree with everything Gothard, nor any minister has spoken 100% of the time. Nor do we agree with those that have persecuted and/or twisted many convictions and points IBLP or Gothard have made. We have gleaned helpful information from the IBLP seminars that we have used in our own life and as well with our young adults while growing up. We have seen fruit as the result. We are thankful for the opportunity to share our personal notes with you that it may benefit you and your young adults. We hope that it will help open, or keep open, the lines of communication and closeness with them. We also hope you will use your own convictions and apply the lessons accordingly.
