BOOK OF KNOWLEDGE
1900's - 1960's
Comparing Opinions and Differences Between Older and Newer Sets
Many antique book dealers and some educators may prefer the earlier sets. We personally own a set from 1931 and another from 1963 that we
will not sell that is kept on our personal shelves. However, it is rare if any, that we use the older set. My children and
I both have found the newer sets to contain more information on each subject and more accurate information especially in the
areas of Science and Health. Not to mention the condition of the newer sets is usually far better as well. The older sets may
be more valuable to collectors and more expensive to purchase. The older versions (1930 and before) do contain sections the newer sets
(1940 to 1960) do not contain but may not be usable to home educators, i.e. foreign language. We have seen the newer sets do
contain the high quality/antique poetry and literature as well as the short story section and the beautiful illustrations. 1960
to 1963 includes more color photos but less wood-cut type illustrations.
The older sets do include a foreign language page with French, German and other languages in captions with illustrations under English
words with no pronunciation guide
or any type of lesson guide. The older editions also contain several references to old wives tales,
blood-letting-ancient medical remedies and other unfruitful works such as how to read tea leaves, palm reading, and other
material that was replaced with more current information. However, some of the older editions
may include a study guide which may be of value to the home educator. The study guides we have seen are in paperback and they are
not common and hard to find and apparently must match the copyright dates of the set to be functional. Few, but some sets do include the "Course of
Study Guide" within the index volume.
We personally would rather find and offer sets to the Christian homeschooling family from the
years 1950-1960's. We feel they are more profitable for children. Anything published and printed after
the early sixties received the "political correctness" and other such editing as God was removed from our
public school systems. That change in the realm of the Spirit effected all published works in our society
and is very noticeable in encyclopedias.
