Teaching Your Children to Pray
W e want to help you encourage your children to develop their relationship with God and help you to teach your child to pray, daily, as an individual. You may print the sample prayer, have your child type or copy it, or design a specific prayer according to the individual needs or circumstances for each of your children.
Prayer is best done aloud. God spoke his word and sent his word. It is
His word that is an active force. He spoke when he created us. He spoke the things that were created. The power of our words and our confessions, even in daily conversation is far more powerful than we realize.
It is best to search the scriptures and include them as much as possible in our prayer. To teach a child, even the youngest child, to pray is simple and easy. Using the word, "talk" to the Lord instead of the word " prayer" would help your child to be more personal in their relationship with God. Let us be like the Bereans in Acts 17:10-11 and search the scriptures to see whether those things are so. Praying scriptures will increase your faith because it is "God's word" and not your word or you leaning to your own understanding and we can believe if God said it, it is so, and those things shall come to pass.
Teach Your Children:
- The best prayer is led by the Holy Spirit.
- The Holy Spirit is our friend.
- The Holy Spirit will teach us all things. (Acts 14:26)
- The Holy Spirit will bring to our memory what Jesus has said. (Acts 14:26)
Acts 14:26 "But the Comforter, who is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said unto you."
Further works/functions of the Holy Spirit can be taught from John 16:7-15.
It is very important to memorize God's word and what Jesus has said
that the Holy Spirit will bring His word to our remembrance. Index cards or post-it-notes with scriptures or sections of scriptures can be strategically placed that we may rehearse and quote them frequently. Mirror in the bathroom, dashboard in the car, on the refridgerator, or on an item next to a
favorite chair are just a few examples.
A few examples of scriptural prayers:
--- Father let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight ... Psalms 19:14a
--- I thank you Lord that you order my steps today ... Ps. 37:23
--- Let my speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that I may know how I ought to answer everyone... Col. 4:6
--- I thank you Lord that by your stripes, I am healed... 1Peter 2:24b, 3John: 2.
--- Father please give me the spirit of wisdom in every area of my life. Eph. 1:17.
--- Help me to know the love of Christ and be filled with all the fullness of God. Eph. 3:19
--- Please work in me to will and to do your
good pleasure. Phil. 2:13

A Must have book for learning how to pray effectively and teach our children how to pray effectively is "Prayers that Avail Much". It is an excellent, quick resource for every prayer need. The author has done the work of searching for specific scriptures for specific needs. The book is very well organized and scripturally sound. This new volume includes all three of the author's earlier books in one! The prayers are personally worded and lists all scripture references.
