Why Classical Music in Education?

We know that God created everyone and gave them gifts. We only know in part the potential and effect the gift of classical music has on each of us. Below are a few details of the effects of listening to classical music. All Glory and Praise belongs to our Lord. It's a sad shame that the Christian world for the most part has neglected these gifts and thought them to only be of use to the lost. It is a Blessing to know that God is not limited to man's opinions, religion, or belief system.
Preschoolers who studied piano performed 34% better in spatial and temporal reasoning ability than preschoolers who spent the same amount of time leaming to use computers. -Rauscher and Shaw, as reported in Neurological Research, February 1997

Listening to music can increase levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1) in the blood from 12.5 to 14%. Interleukins are a family of proteins associated with blood and platelet production, lymphocyte stimulation and cellular protection against AIDS, cancer, and other diseases. -Michigan State University

For the unborn Child, classical music, played at a rhythm of 60 beats per minute, equivalant to that of a resting human heart, provides an environment conductive to creative and intellectual development. -Dr Thomas Verny, The Secret Life of the Unborn Child

The College Entrance Examination Board reported in 1996 that students with experience in musical performance scored 31 points higher on the verbal part of the SAT and 39 points higher on the math section than the national average.*

From the ages of nine to eleven, auditory pathways of their speech and listening skills is being enhanced. Choral reading, poetry, and varieties of pronunciation and dialect become important as the brain and auditory system begins to process the information. During this stage, the corpus callosum, the bridge between the left and right sides of the brain, completes its development, allowing both hemispheres to respond simultaneously. Recent studies have found that the corpus callosum of musicians is thicker and more fully developed than in other people, reinforcing the idea that music enlarges existing neural pathways and stimulates learning and creativity. The planum temporale, located in the temporal lobe of the cortex, is also more pronounced in musicians. This area of the brain appears to be associated with language processing and might also catagorize sounds, suggesting a perceptual link between language and music.*

From the ages of eleven to thirteen, educators have observed, a self-consciousness begins to develop as the right hemisphere of the brain becomes harder to access. From 13-15, the voice in boys drops and they often lose the more intuitive, emotional characteristics that were readily available before. Especially at these ages, music, art and creative physical education, are important to full mind and body integration.*

RE: A.D.D. & A.D.H.D.
Researchers and studies have reported that those who listened to Mozart reduced their theta brain waves in exact rhythm to the underlying beat of the music, and displayed better focus and mood control, diminished impulsivity, and improved social skills. Among the subjects who improved, 70 percent maintained that improvement six months after the end of the study.*

Music brings a positive and relaxing atmosphere to any home or classroom, as well as allowing the sensory integration necessary for long-term memory. In a comprehensive review of hundreds of empirically based studies between 1972 and 1992, three educators associated with the Future of Music Project found that music aids in reading, language (including foreign language), mathematics, and overall academic achievements. The investigators also found that music develops social skills, and increases perceptual motor skill development and psychomotor development. *
